Coleman Hawkins - tenor saxophone Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis - tenor saxophone Tommy Flanagan - piano Ron Carter - bass Gus Johnson - drums
Coleman Hawkins is frequently identified as the father of the tenor saxophone. Technically, of course, that honor goes to Adolphe Sax, but Hawkins unquestionably gave rebirth to an instrument that had for decades been valuable primarily as a novelty device. Because of his illuminating artistry, over the decades he became the forebear of hundreds of tenor stylists. In this collaboration with Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Hawkins encounters one of his most illustrious spiritual descendants. With a perfect rhythm section headed by pianist Tommy Flanagan, the two tenor men prove that when great artists meet on the common ground of the jazz tradition, there is never a generation gap.
* Joe Goldberg - Liner Notes * Rudy Van Gelder - Engineer
Hawkins was one of the main inspirations of his fellow tenor Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, so it was logical that they would one day meet up in the recording studio. This CD has many fine moments from these two highly competitive jazzmen, particularly the lengthy title cut and a heated tradeoff on "In a Mellow Tone," on which Davis goes higher but Hawkins wins on ideas. --- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
