Milt Jackson served a significant part of his apprenticeship in Dizzy Gillespie's and Woody Herman's big bands in the 1940s. In the 1960s, he recorded his own big band albums. So Jackson was no stranger to the challenges and opportunities inherent in the power of large ensembles. And yet, there's never been anything in jazz quite like the Count Basie swing machine, and when the world's leading vibraharpist was teamed with the Basie band, the result had to be swing compounded--the essence of swing--swing to a fare-thee-well. And so it was.
