This is the fifth volume of music recorded in 1959 by Shelly Manne & His Men during three evenings at San Francisco's Black Hawk, one of the great jazz clubs. The first four volumes were originally issued in the early Sixties, and are available again as Original Jazz Classics. Volume 5 is released for the first time as an OJC, completing the picture of what happened at the Black Hawk in three amazing evenings of recordings. Everything the quintet put on tape that week was "A" material. Here on Volume 5--the longest of the series--are two originals by Victor Feldman, a seldom-heard Horace Silver composition, two standards and a complete version of the group's theme, "A Gem from Tiffany". |
