Jazz
with George Cables, George Mraz, Elvin Jones
Art Pepper's triumphant Village Vanguard engagements in the summer of 1977, during the alto saxophonist's first U.S. tour as a leader, are the stuff of legend; and they were captured by his friend and longtime producer Les Koenig for what became four albums that chronicle his belated rise to jazz preeminence. This first volume is one of Pepper's most intensely personal collections, with the opening "Valse Triste" only suggesting the depths plumbed on "Goodbye" and "Blues for Les." Pianist George Cables, bassist George Mraz, and drummer Elvin Jones make up the exceptional rhythm section. |
