Thelonious Monk is not only one of the most original but also one of the most frequently played composers of jazz music. To master the rhythmic and harmonic intricacies and extravagancies of his music is invariably a challenge to every impovising musician. It is one thing to master the technical side of this task, but quite another to do justice to the spirit of Monk's music without giving up one's own personality. So how can one approach the heritage of a musical legend whose own historical recordings seem to be "perfect" in a sense that one feels that nothing could be taken away or added without disturbing the perfect balance of the music.
Monk In Motian, drummer Paul Motian's first album on JMT, provides a fresh and unconventional answer. For years Motian has been playing in two of the essential piano-trio formations of modern jazz, those of Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett, from these experiences he has developed a feeling for group democracy which can be heard in the unusually cast trio on Monk In Motion - Joe Lovano tenor saxphone, Bill Frisell guitar, Paul Motian drums.
The electronic, hovering sounds of Bill Frisell's guitar make the harmonies less definite and create attractive new shadings. Joe Lovano frequently uses melodic variation of the theme or of theme fragments in his soloing. This approach works exceptionfully by guest pianist GERI ALLEN in Off Minor.
Each of the ten compositions on Monk In Motian presents one compact, well formulated idea corresponding to Monk's original conception. Thus each title receives its very own and consistent mood: from the lyrical beauty in the opening Crepuscule With Nellie over the frolicking playfulness of Bye-Ya to the urgent vehemence of a relatively fast version of Straight No Chaser. In Justice (better known as Evidence) Lovano and Frissell take up the "stumbling" rhythm of the theme into their improvising, work with it until you can only fell it very subtly, before it regains its strength in the final reprise of the theme.
Motian, Lovano and Frisell as well as guest artists Geri Allen and Dewey redman fill in ten detailed sketches from piano architect Monk with their own individual colours. Monk In Motian sets Monk in motion whilst remaining faithful to the original and at the same time to itself.
