American Landscape is a true labor of love. I began recording the project after I had learned that my mother had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer for which there is no cure. My Mother loved what I call "American Music" - the music of our great composers such as Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, George Gershwin and Stephen Sondheim. I decided to dedicate the CD to her, hoping to God that I wouldn't have to say, "In Memoriam." I wrote a song for her called "Saying Goodbye," which turned out to be prophetic. On February 18, the very day American Landscape was scheduled for final mastering, my Mom died. This is my dedication to her and the compositions herein represent what I consider to be truly "American Music." -David Benoit June 23, 1997
