Ella Jane Fitzgerald left the Decca fold to record from 1956 for Norman Granz' Verve Records, where she went on to recording history doing what she did best: singing the great songs of the century arranged and played by the best talent available. This is not, however, to make light of the legacy she left behind at Decca. The breadth of the work she did, from girlish novelty numbers to scat favorites to lush ballads and back again, are the high water marks of a talent in progress, blooming before our ears. Her contribution to great singing was immeasurable, and much of that contribution occurred during her Decca Years. |
