Long before it was fashionable to talk about honoring "the jazz tradition," Charles Mingus was doing it -- in his own unique way, of course. Recorded in 1960 with a nonet and an expanded big band, Pre-Bird consists primarily of music Mingus composed in the Forties, some of which had never been recorded before. The influence of Duke Ellington is powerfully evident, but so is a wide range of other influences, and the resulting mix can be best described as pure Mingus.
Includes liner notes by Brian Priestly, Martin Williams and Leonard Feather. |
