Strong cuts, good concept, and excellent Osby solos. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide

Alto and soprano saxophonist Greg Osby has resolved never to stand still musically, never to rest content with past achievments, never to record the same music twice.
His first album Sound Theatre (JMT 919 011-2) was a collection of oneact plays. Mindgames (JMT 919 021-2), Osby's second, was conceived as a concept album with each composition representing the problems and conflicts of relationships. Season of Renewal is the latest product of Greg Osby's constant extension of scope. It is a suite about development and change, an expression of his musical and social philosophy.
Renewal, change, progression. These are also prominent ideas in the teaching of Malcom X, the Afro-American champion of freedom whom the protagonists of Brooklyn's lively Black artist scene, Greg Osby and the rest of the musicians' collective M-Base (Cassandra Wilson, Steve Coleman, Robin Eubanks, Geri Allen and others) among them, consider as their muse. Greg Osby: 'Malcom was into perfection and development. He was into not being dependent, he was into going out and getting your thing together, using all kinds of resources, and don't let anybody tell you you can't do this and you can't be that.'
Greg Osby respectfully will not accept any kind of dogmatic restrictions for himself and his band Sound Theatre. He refuses to have his artistic vision defined and limited by any particular categorization or classification. His pieces combine acoustic sounds in stimulating ways with electronic sounds; bring together ethnic elements and the most advanced technologies; refer to funk and R&B just like - and this may surprise many listeners - to classical music.
Even though Greg Osby considers the practical musical experiences which he has gathered since age twelve, first in Top 40 Bands and later in a variety of jazz ensembles, as more significant than his formal education, his studies at Howard University, Washington, D.C., provided him with important compositional skills. ' I wasn't terribly happy there, but I paid attention. The way I write now is with fourpart choral textures, a lot of counterpoint.'
After Howard (1978-79) Greg Osby spent three years at Boston's renowned Berklee College of Music. There he got acquainted with guitarists Kevin McNeal and Kevin Eubanks who are both to be heard on Season of Renewal.
Season of Renewal has basically two sides: one is rhythmic with a funky groove. Guitar and synthesizer sounds are prominent on these tracks. The other, more quiet half of the album, full of voluptuous sounds and strange moods, is dominated by voices: Cassandra Wilson, currently the most celebrated vocalist on the jazz scene (Osby plays on her fourth album Jumpworld, JMT 919 033-2), and keybordist/singer Amina Claudine Myers lend Greg Osby's record a special appeal. Each singer takes over the lead on some of the pieces. For the first time ever Wilson and Myers share a duet, and for the first time they appear on an album together.
Greg Osby likes to present the characteristic trademarks of Osby the instrumentalist, an unmistakable saxophone sound, cool and intense at the same time, and deliberate, clearly articulated, original lines, in varying musical contexts. Here he has hit upon a particularly arresting possibility. His saxophone may double a melody carried by a voice, it may play around the melody, or it may take over the lead. Often voice(s) and instrument blend so well as to make it impossible to distinguish both clearly.
Besides guitarist Kevin McNeal, Lonnie Plaxico, bass, Edward Simon, keyboards, and Paul Samuels, drums, make up the current personnel of Sound Theatre. On Season of Renewal, Cassandra Wilson; Amina Claudine Myers, Kevin Eubanks, keyboardist Renee Rosnes (well-known for her work with Gary Thomas, among others) and percussionist Steve Thornton reinforce this highly competent crew.
Greg osby has declared that his personal goals as well as the aim of M-Base are 'to play music that stands out for this time and place the way "Motown" or "Blue Note blowing session" brings to mind specific sounds and songs and players' (Downbeat); to play music that is alive and fresh, that opens up new vistas. Season of Renewal is one more step in this direction.
