Count Basie was a leading pianist of the swing era and, alongside Duke Ellington, an outstanding representative of big band style. Basie played an abbreviated boogie-stride and he avoided everything that seemed to be a "musical retardant" to him: faster and lighter was his motto. Particular about his big band was the flexibility of the rhythm group, who often supported the soloists with spontaneous riffs and thereby prevented a too ponderous sound. |
