Recorded: 1963-1965, The Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, Rhode Island

Most jazz collectors have likely owned an earlier version of the first disc in this compilation, a 1963 Newport performance by Thelonious Monk. Unlike the earlier releases, this one drops an unrelated set by Miles Davis, substituting a previously unissued concert by Monk from the 1965 Newport Jazz Festival. Monk is in great form on the first disc, whether twisting through his angular masterpiece "Criss Cross" with tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse in tow, or is his gently loping ballad "Light Blue," in which one can plainly hear the influence of stride pianists in his playing, while Rouse's tenor percolates over the steady rhythm. The adventurous clarinetist Pee Wee Russell sits in with the quartet for two numbers, slowly gaining his footing in "Nutty" while excelling in the romping blues "Blue Monk" with a wild, dissonant solo that must have pleased its composer. Though some critics remain in doubt about the value of this one-shot meeting, it deserves to be judged only after multiple hearings. The set closes with a jaunty take of Monk's theme song "Epistrophy." The 1965Newport performance is rather brief at just over 35 minutes, but a valuable treasure nonetheless. All four Monk compositions will be well-known by his aficionados, though this set by the pianist's final working quartet merits attention. With the addition of bassist Larry Gales and drummer Ben Riley, Monk finally found the most reliable rhythmic foundation to perform his demanding works. Rouse's searing tenor is the highlight of an extended treatment of "Off Minor," while Monk's alternately melodic and quirky piano is the centerpiece of "Ruby, My Dear." A playful rendition of "Hackensack" and yet another exploration of "Epistrophy" round out this updated compilation, which should be considered an essential purchase by fans of Thelonious Monk.
