From the first stereo release of "Concert by the Sea":

What was to become THE classic piano jazz album of all time was born 15 years ago at a live concert in the seacoast town of Carmel, Calif. Erroll Garner, whose name even then was a byword to jazz piano, was recorded in performance.

The jazz interpretations, nuances and stylings which came out of that concert were inimitable. "Concert By The Sea" has been hailed by jazz buffs through the years as the supreme standard for jazz piano recordings.

Over the 15 years since its release, this record has been:
* a strong, steady seller piling up hundreds of thousands of sales both here and in Europe (in the monaural version)
* retained in the active catalog despite the advent of stereo as the industry's standard
* critically acclaimed over and over again as the best jazz piano album ever.

Because of the continuing demand for this record, Columbia has re-issued it in a magnificent new re-channelled version. Columbia engineers have carefully applied the most advanced techniques to enhance the LP with a new depth and immediacy for today's phonograph systems.

John Wilson, Record Critic for the New York Times says--"This was a magnificent record when it first came out 15 years ago . . . this stereo version adds immeasurably. It gives the performance an exciting close-up immediacy and richness that I didn't hear in the mono version. Listening to it makes me feel as though I'd just discovered Erroll all over again." At a time when the public was not even buying albums, people had to have this one for their collection. These same people will want to own the magnificent stereo version. And today's stereo-age generation, who would not normally buy a mono version, will be able to discover and enjoy "Concert By The Sea" for themselves. It isn't taking long for the word to spread. Already PM Southern Region Gene Denonovich reports reaction has been good at key Good Music stations and that R&B outlets were very happy to see it released in stereo. Stations in his market are playing "April In Paris," and "I'll Remember April." Airplay has been sparking additional dealer orders. Don Van Gorp stressed the album's potential for sales equal to what it has already sold at mono, and that means hundreds of thousands of units.

Not only can this LP sell on its own musical merit, but many critics have said that it has an even wider appeal through the artistry of this man's playing, it's more than a performance--it's a culture. Echoes of this performance will be heard the next 100 years. Garher's warmth, perception and depth has never been captured as vividly as in this LP. His left hand plays like it belongs to another person. His right hand does something entirely different--no one else plays like him. He is world-renowned, and this particular album made him so.
