Grammy Award Nominee!INNER VOYAGE, the ninth release on the Blue Note label from the 36-year-old, world-renowned Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba features drummer Ignacio Berroa, bassist Jeff Chambers, and special guest, the ubiquitous tenor saxophonist Michael Becker. INNER VOYAGE represents the next step in Gonzalo's ongoing quest to become a more "integrated musician" with his all-encompassing synthesis of Latin, Afro-Cuban, and African-American musical styles. Gonzalo Rubalcaba and his ensemble conduct a swinging and soulful sonic seance, which conjures up the essences of Rubalcaba's favorite people. A lullaby-like melody imbues on "Yolanda Anas," a love song to his little girl, as well as the joys of "Joao" and "Joan," for his two boys, are intensely personal reflections. Michael Breacker's Coltrane-coded saxophone flights soar over the maze-like melodies of "Blues Lundvall," a playful riff on Blue Note CEO Bruce Lundvall's name and "The Hard One," opens with an ingenious rhythm that segues into somehigh-wire group improvisation. "Promenade" us composed for the great bassist Ron Carter. Rubalcaba has always traced the ways of his roots; he explores a Duke Ellingtion staple, "Caravan," one of the first and still best recognized examples of Latin Jazz.
Includes liner notes by Howard Mandel and Gonzalo Rubalcaba.
