The Art Ensemble of Chicago was created in the mid '60s by Roscoe Mitchell, Lester Bowie and Malachi Favors, all members of Chicago's Association for the Advancement of Creative Music. BAP-TIZUM may be their most versatile and exciting album.
Recorded live at the Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Festival in 1972, this highly experimental recording is marked by textural variety and tonal obscurity. By turns soft and delicate, loud and raucous, The Art Ensemble of Chicago represents jazz avant-garde at its peak. Rarely do these musicians fall into steady grooves, or play structured melodies under a harmonic sequence, instead relying on free improvisation and open song forms. BAP-TIZUM is a largely frenetic and zany effort. Roscoe Mitchell and company use a wide assortment of percussion and horns to create a cornucopia of sounds and tonal colors. Delightfully obnoxious, this album is a classic work. |
