Jazz / Post-Bop; Mainstream Jazz
Recorded: Jan-Mar 1999
Clarinetist and composer Don Byron reveals several aspects of his multifaceted musical persona on Romance With The Unseen, his second Blue Note recording. The most adventurous and innovative clarinetist to emerge on the international creative music scene over the past quarter century, Byron is respected not only for his virtuosity but also for his ability to write music for a variety of musical contexts that reflect both his respect for the jazz tradition and his passionate social conscience. Joined on the recording by long-time collaborator guitarist Bill Frisell, bassist Drew Gress and master drummer Jack DeJohnette, Byron delivers a confident series of performances ranging from interpretations of lesser-known works by Duke Ellington and Herbie Hancock, jazz masters who inspired him, to covers of the Juan Tizol classic "Perdido" and the Beatles ballad "I'll Follow The Sun," to six originals that reflect inspirations varying from his moods to his politics. |
