Making sweet music together pretty much constantly since meeting at a Philadelphia junior high school circa mid-70s, the principals in Pieces (keyboardist James K. Lloyd, bassist Cedric Napoleon, drummer Curtis Harmon) were way ahead of their time. From the get go, they mixed jazz and R&B long before there was a format for that, and all of their commercial success has not found them deviating from that original vision. Their most enduring radio hit is the instrumental piano ballad "For You," and that sort of elegance runs all through the tunes here, even the most rousing tracks like the skittery, jazzy "Driving It Home" featuring Lloyd's amazing grace. Still, the collection could use a little more of that sort of chunky, bass driven groove intersperced with all the mid-tempo lushness. Melodically, though, Pieces never misses, from the soprano sax driven opener "Took So Long" (horn played by occasional group member Eddie Baccus, Jr.) through the stunningly romantic (and also soprano based) "Love You For Life." The band indicates that the title means they have returned to a sound reminiscent of their early 80s work, and the retro vocal track "You and I" seems to fit that concept. Maysa Leak takes the floating lead vocal (anyone remember when they called these tunes Quiet Stormlike?) and Cherie Mitchell chimes in with a wonderfully bubbly Rhodes solo. The melancholy "Cry of the Lonely" is Lloyd's equivalent here to "For You," a true showcase for one of the genre's finest melodic keyboard whizzes.

Pieces of a Dream

Active Decades: '70s, '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: 1975 in Philadelphia, PA
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Urban, Crossover Jazz, Smooth Jazz

Comprised of bassist Cedric Napoleon, drummer Curtis Harmon, and keyboardist James Lloyd, Pieces of a Dream were founded in 1975 in Philadelphia when the principal members were all teenagers. Originally somewhat jazz-oriented, Pieces of a Dream have mostly emphasized R&B, although they usually include a few jazz numbers in their performances. Grover Washington, Jr. produced their first three albums (all for Elektra during 1981-1983); they have since recorded for Manhattan and Blue Note. Saxophonist Ron Kerber became a member in the 1990s, preceding the four varied releases that appeared throughout the decade. A collection appeared at the turn of the century, but the band proved to still be going strong with 2001's Acquainted with the Night and 2002's Love's Silhouette. No Assembly Required was released in 2004 on Cleveland's Heads Up label, followed by 2006's Pillow Talk, also on Heads Up.
