On Time Is of the Essence, Tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker swaps the use of piano for organ, and records for the first time with the legendary drummer Elvin Jones, in addition to drummers Jeff "Tain" Watts and Bill Stewart. With Larry Goldings on organ and the inimitable stamp of Pat Metheny on guitar, Brecker's sixth solo album brings his half of a century to a memorable close.
The new album is inspired by Brecker's appreciation of the importance of time. "Where the notes are placed is as important as what the notes are," offers Brecker. "As fundamental and essential as notes will always be, they are almost decorative when compared to the 'essence' of time."
Time is of the Essence brings us Brecker at the height of his career. With seven Grammy's, six solo albums, hundreds of recordings with the greatest names in jazz and contemporary music, and more than a million miles traveled on tour, Brecker is a consummate musician whose history is forever intertwined with the history of music.
