Part of the fine Verve series of compilations where popularjazz performers pick artists that influenced their work andselect their favourite tracks. Here singer/pianist Diana Krall explores the music of singer/pianist Shirley Horn. Most of these tracks span the decade of Horn's Verve recordings, and feature her super tight trio. Horn's work has always been uniformly excellent; every track on this sampler of hermusic is a knockout. She's a master of the romantic jazz ballad. Her sultry and smoky vocals are intimate and conversational, and she uses odd-metered timing and silences to make an emotional point, rather than vocal acrobatics. Her masterly chord cluster piano style is used to punctuate her every vocal phrase. Included here are such Horn classics as the ballads "Summer (Estate)" and "A Time For Love", both with Johnny Mandel's gorgeous string arrangements, and swinging versions of "Hard Hearted Hannah, the Vamp of Savannah"" and "Hit The Road, Jack" from Horn's tribute album to Ray Charles. This CD is a perfect introduction to Shirley Horn's artistry.
The ultimate series presents "Best of" collections with a difference. Today's top jazz artists select and share their thoughts on their favorite tracks by the jazz giants. It's a perfect way to be introduced to the masters of jazz.
"You can't categorize Shirley Horn... she is sexy without trying. I loved her the first time I heard her," says Diana Krall in the linear notes to this CD. Speaking with obvious affection and critical prowess, Krall examines the legacy of Shirley Horn's recording career and the influence it's had on her own illustrious art. |
