Ray Anderson is not from New Orleans but it seems he has a spiritual home there. "At age 8, I chose the trombone because of the sound of my father's Dixieland records," he says. "I still love that sound, and the sound of New Orleans brass bands, and Professor Longhair and Dr. John and James Booker and all the rest way down yonder." With his Pocket Brass Band – that is: a brass band in condensed form -, Ray Anderson closes the gap between the beginnings of jazz in New Orleans and his own musical adventures in the present. On the basis of traditional and funk concepts, the Pocket Brass Band provides some trans-historical excursions - witty, original, grooving. This is jazz traditionalism at its most surprising!
One of the all-time masters of the trombone, Ray Anderson does not just blow his horn, he moans, roars, growls and speaks on it. Besides his work in the bands of Gil Evans, Anthony Braxton, Carla Bley, David Murray or Charlie Haden, he has been the leader or co-leader of numerous important ensembles such as the Slickaphonics, BassDrumBone, the Alligatory Band, the 4-trombone quartet Slideride, and the Lapis Lazuli Band. Bandmate Lew Soloff, formerly associated with such diverse acts as Frank Sinatra, Ornette Coleman and Blood, Sweat & Tears and one of today's most versatile virtuosos on the trumpet, recently released his own album "Rainbow Mountain" (TIP-888 838 2). Matt Perrine - also a fine bass and tuba player – has played a lot in brass, blues and reggae bands in New Orleans. Bobby Previte is known as an original drummer and composer and works regularly with his own bands like Latin For Travelers, Empty Suits, Bump the Renaissance, The Horse and Weather Clear and Track Fast. With these four masters involved, the Pocket Brass Band has everything a brass band needs - and much more. |
