Abdullah Ibrahim piano Marcus McLaurine bass George Johnson drums
As South Africa's foremost musical ambassador, Abdullah Ibrahim (formerly Dollar Brand) has been praised by critics and lovers of the jazz idiom worldwide. His unique compositional style, a successful fusion of universal and often unlikely sources, defies categorization, while his skill as a pianist leaves listeners in awe. Subtle hints of the East, traditional African melodies and regal Ellingtonian progressions pervade his music. A master of synthesis and the most prolific representent of the world music and ethno-jazz movement, Ibrahim's effortless command of seemingly disparate musical archetypes baffles even the most adept analyst. Last year's celebratory album Knysna Blue, an introspective excursion into the collective spirit of South Africa, was an immediate hit in Ibrahim's home country. It was also voted CD of the month by German HIFI VISION and one of the top ten jazz records of 1994 by JAZZ JOURNAL.
Recorded over two nights at New York's famous Sweet Basil, Yarona (which means: our thing) is Ibrahim's first trio release in many years. Here, in the intimate setting of a jazz club, the breathtaking scope of Ibrahim's compositions stands revealed. This collection of Ibrahim favourites showcases the pianist's improvisational skills along with the talents of jazz veterans Marcus McLaurine and George Johnson who form the nucleus of his band Ekaya. Even experts in Ibrahim's music will be surprised by the many fresh and jazzy ideas of this trio performance. |
