Jazz
Recorded at The Van Gelder Recording Studios, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, 15th August 1996
Abdullah Ibrahim piano, composer Marcus McLaurine bass George Gray drums
All compositions by Abdullah Ibrahim
Recently more and more producers in the music field have found this artist's fusions of Eastern, African and jazz elements fit for soundtracks, pop songs, groove samples and radio theme songs. Since his first own record in 1963 (produced by Duke Ellington), Abdullah Ibrahim (formerly known as Dollar Brand) has grown into South Africa's leading musical ambassador and one of the most brilliant jazz pianists worldwide. While a prolific veteran of the world/ethno jazz movement, Ibrahim returned to the piano trio, one of the classic jazz formats, for his 1995 live recording "Yarona" (TIP-888820 2). Following Yarona's great success (Jazz Journal: "Blessing", Jazzthetik: *****), Ibrahim now delivers another strong and concentrated trio effort, this time recorded in the studio by legendary Rudy van Gelder. A mixture of long-time favorites and brand new tunes, "Cape Town Flowers" is an impressive document of Ibrahim's compositional skills and pianistic virtuosity as well as his feel for ensemble playing and the depth of his musical soul. Based in Cape Town (his birthplace) as well as New York and recently awarded as "Artist in Residence" in Boston, Massachusetts, Ibrahim has been an exclusive recording artist for ENJA RECORDS for many years. His upcoming European tour will start on March 15 and covers Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Spain and Great Britain. |
