The African Suite is a suite of Abdullah Ibrahim compositions arranged for string orchestra by the Swiss composer Daniel Schnyder.
It was first performed in November 1997 in Fribourg Cathedral, Switzerland, by the European Union Youth Orchestra and the Abdullah Irahim Trio (with Beldon Bullock, bass and George Gray, drums)
For more than thirty years, Abdullah Ibrahim's soulful music has been moving audiences worldwide. Its universal language results from an amalgam of jazz, African rhythm, Arabic influences, English choral and European romantic music filled with spiritual truth and communicative power. In 1997, Daniel Schnyder who is a composer in his own right (his operas, symphonies, concertos and chamber works have been performed on four continents) met the challenge of arranging Dr. Ibrahim's music for a classical string orchestra. Refering to its many multi-cultural ingredients, Schnyder created a highly accessible orchestral synthesis of European classical music and South African heritage incorporating Abdullah Ibrahim's improvising jazz trio.
"African Suite" was carefully recorded at the historic abbey of Payerne (Switzerland) with a selection of talented young string players from the Youth Orchestra of the European Community founded by Claudio Abbado. The recording was also produced by Swiss Television (DRS) for a film of 2 x 30 minutes length that will be shown in TV programs all around the world. The suite received its concert premiere in February 1998 at Zurich's legendary Tonhalle by the Zurich Chamber Orchestra who immediately adopted one of the compositions, Blanton, into their standard repertoire that will presented on international tours. In addition, the Abdullah Ibrahim Trio will perform the whole suite with other renowned orchestras around the world.
Adding a distinguished European sound and feeling to Dr. Ibrahim's wonderful melodies, "African Suite" proves a musical connection that has always existed in his music. For classical audiences, the encounter with the spirit of Abdullah Ibrahim's art will be as amazing and enlightening as it has been for jazz listeners for many years. |
