TRIO DE CLARINETTES Louis Sclavis cl, bcl Armand Angster cl, bcl, c-bcl Jacques Di Donato cl, bcl ARCADO STRING TRIO Mark Feldman vln Ernst Reijseger cello Mark Dresser b
Presenting two of contemporary music's most advanced ensembles, this unique recording resulted from a two-year collaboration between the trio Arcado (violin, cello, bass) and French Trio de Clarinettes. As individuals, as trios, as a collective, these musicians disregard boundaries among musical genres: jazz, classical, folk, free improvisation. Violin virtuoso Mark Feldman's curriculum vitae includes an almost absurd variety of gigs: chamber music with Anthony Davis, improvised duets with synthesizer player Richard Teitelbaum, tours with country crooner Loretta Lynn. Bassist Mark Dresser may be best known for a decade playing with Anthony Braxton, but he has also recorded with such as John Zorn, Tim Berne, Bobby Bradford, and Ray Anderson. Dutch cellist Ernst Reijseger (who replaced founding member Hank Roberts, heard on the trio's three previous releases) currently plays with Clusone 3 and Misha Mengelberg's ICP Orchestra and is an occasional collaborator of renowned classical cello player Yo-Yo Ma. To jazz fans, Louis Sclavis is the best known member of France's Trio de Clarinettes. As a leader he has recorded for numerous European labels. Jacques Di Donato has played with several improvising bands in France, but has also a thriving career as a classical/chamber music clarinetist. Armand Angster is even more closely associated with new notated music and has been a soloist with numerous European orchestras and chamber ensembles. The player-composers' farflung experience gives the Double Trio comprehensive scope. Most of the pieces (each player contributed one of them) are extraordinarily complex, growing organicly and resulting shapely on macro and micro levels. At every stage in the program's development, the participants kept honing and refining their pieces, tailoring them to everyone's strengths. Here, a doubled vision results in anything but an indistinct blur. "Green Dolphy Suite" is a great document of today's most innovative musical scene. |
