Mal Waldron piano Steve Lacy soprano saxophone Manfred Schoof trumpet Jimmy Woode bass Makaya Ntshoko drums
Mal Waldron's dark compositions and his percussive, minimalistic piano style have fascinated musicians and listeners for a lifetime. A former collaborator of Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy and Billie Holiday, Waldron was once inspired by Thelonious Monk's music to develop his own aesthetics. In the late fifties, he worked as a musical director for the Prestige label that released six of his own recordings between 1956 and 1961. In the mid-sixties, he left the United States and lived in Europe and Japan until his death in 2002. His album "Black Glory" was the very first production on ENJA RECORDS starting this label back in 1971.
Mal Waldron's association with Steve Lacy, the leading soprano player in jazz, dates back to 1958 when Lacy recorded his album "Reflections." After both had relocated in Europe they began working together on a semi-regular basis, from duets to extended groups. The album "One-Upmanship", originally released in 1977 and one of their best recordings, is now available on CD for the first time. For this re-mastered release, three piano solo tunes are added (vintage 1978), among them great versions of two of Waldron's best known compositions, "Soul Eyes" and "Duquility." |
