This album was a labor of love.
The Mel-Tones were the vehicle through which Mel Torme transformed tradition into innovation. In the history of the jazz vocal group, The Mel-Tones function as the missing link between the two most obvious zeniths of that worthy though neglected art form, The Boswell Sisters in the early '30s and Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross in the late '50s.
However, in the broader spectrum of solo vocal jazz, the group provided the catalyst through which Torme re-invented the vocabulary of big band for the human voice in the modern jazz era. The Mel-Tones original 1946 recordings directly anticipate Torme's solo album triumphs for Verve.
