Guitarist Charlie Byrd has had a longtime association with the Concord label, as shown on this 1998 CD, which has a sampling from his large catalog. In fact, the dozen selections are drawn from 12 different releases, matching the acoustic Brazilian-oriented player with such notables as tenorman Scott Hamilton, guitarists Laurindo Almeida and Carlos Barbosa-Lima, violinist Johnny Frigo, harmonica whiz Hendrik Meurkens, altoist Bud Shank, Ken Peplowski (on clarinet and tenor), the Washington Guitar Quintet and the Annapolis Brass Quintet. The music ranges from swing and bop to bossa nova, with highlights including "Swing '59," "I Could Write a Book," "Soon," and "One Note Samba." ---Scott Yanow, allmusic |
