It would be tempting to invent similar categories to those of "male singer" for the artistry of Sarah Vaughan, to find a feline word for "crooner", but this would be to forget that her virtuosity is not made of murmuring and whispers, her power of enchantment also comes from the extreme breadth of her register, from that singular fashion she has of striking the velvetness of a ballad into one's memory with a single cry, a hint of tears.
