Recorded: Feb 1988
Primarily associated with the M-Base school of creative funk, Cassandra Wilson was having a difficult time finding a place for her vocals in the dense ensembles that usually dominate that music. Blue Skies was a real change of pace, a set of nine standards in which Wilson is backed by a creative but conventional trio (pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Lonnie Plaxico and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington). Her voice in this setting (and her improvising style) sounds very much like Betty Carter, but Wilson would develop much more individuality during the next few years. ---Scott Yanow, allmusic
