Jazz
Recognized as one of the finest contemporary jazz keyboardists and composers, Keiko Matsui has sold millions of records worldwide. Known for her unique ability to blend Eastern mysticism with playful melodies, Matsui's easy funk piano has made her a favorite at concert halls, jazz festivals, and on the radio.
WHISPER FROM THE MIRROR is a re-release of Matsui's newest title, showcasing her classically-inspired themes alongside jazz improvisations and sweeping harmonies. Originally released in 2000, this album contains a new song (Trees) and a new enhanced track with breathtaking video footage and special photo images.
Being named "Best Female Artist" at the Oasis Smooth Jazz Awards (2000, 2001) and Billboard's #1 Independent Contemporary Jazz Artist (1997) was for Keiko a confirmation of her longtime status as one of the genre's most innovative and enduring artists. Much of her appeal lies in the ability to compose and perform uplifting songs - melodies that tap into both her formal, classical training as well as her lifelong passions for R&B/funk, jazz, and pop. "When I record an album, I follow the flow of the tune or try to find the destiny of the melody," says Matsui. "And when I compose, I do not think about structural restrictions. Playing, I just enjoy myself and believe in the faith of the tunes."
WHISPER FROM THE MIRROR illustrates Matsui's musical inspiration, beginning with the provocative title. "The mirror is a very interesting thing," says Keiko. "In the Japanese Shinto Shrine, at the deepest part of the shrine, a mirror is placed, as if it is a deity or god itself. The mirror reflect us, our thinking, our soul, our spirit." |
