Bruce Barth's second CD for Enja is an impressive affair; the pianist is joined by alto and soprano saxophonist Steve Wilson, trumpeter and flugelhornist Scott Wendholt, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummer Leon Parker. Barth's imaginative arrangements are immediately apparent with his somewhat dissonant approach to "April in Paris" and a brisk treatment of "In the Still of the Night." Most of the session is devoted to Barth's compelling originals, including the two-part suite "Where Eagles Fly" and the touching ballad "Song for Nefer" (written in memory of his 20-year-old cat). This disc is well worth acquiring, though it may be somewhat difficult to find. ---Ken Dryden, All Music Guide |
