Shirley Scott - Organ (Hammond)
George Tucker - Bass
Otis Finch
Roy Brooks - Drums
Stanley Turrentine - Sax (Tenor)

During the forty-plus years in which the art of jazz organ has been dominated by Jimmy Smith and his army of disciples, Shirley Scott stood out from the rest of the B-3 pack. Her tone is noticeably mellower than Smith's, yet, as Richard Cook and Brian Morton have commented, "there's an authority and an unusual sense of power in reserve which keep her music simmering somewhere near the boil". The Philadelphia organist made her initial mark with Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, then formed her own group with future husband Stanley Turrentine, the great tenor saxophonist whose big, barking tone suggests Texas more than his birthplace of Pittsburgh. "Hip Soul" and "Hip Twist" feature the Scott-Turrentine organ-tenor team at its toughest.

A smart combination of two 1961 albums, Hip Soul and Hip Twist, both of which featured Stanley Turrentine on sax. Hip Soul is the smokier and livelier of the pair, especially on "Stanley's Time" and the Turrentine-composed title track; the material is delivered with a taut intelligence. Hip Twist doesn't suffer much in comparison, though, and gives Scott a bit more presence, as she introduces several themes with impassioned swirls; unlike Hip Soul, it has a couple of tunes from her own pen.
