Joe Turner is Kansas City Jazz and Blues personified. The ‘Boss Of The Blues’ is an album by the American blues shouter ‘Big Joe’ Turner. This is a great combination of tunes, classic blues, rock and up-tempo swing. The musicians are tremendous, with among others tenor saxophonist Frank Wess and Pete Johnson on the piano. ‘Big Joe’ Turner could sing in NYC traffic and still easily be heard above the roar. The ‘Boss Of The Blues’ marks one of the last reunions Turner would have with Johnson, as, supported by a number of swing’s best performers, they re-created a number of the classic tracks that had helped lay the groundwork for rhythm and blues. |
