Albright takes on the duties of soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophone, flute, alto flute, keyboards, bass guitar in addition to contributing background vocals -all this new recording Groovology. "I definitely had my hands full," he chuckles. "But to me, it doesn't feel like work - it's a labor of love."
The music on the new CD propels Albright and his cohorts on a rhythmic and percussive driven journey, exploring the groove- oriented theme established by the title track as well many early stylistic influences of this self-described "funkateer." Growing up in South Central Los Angeles, Albright's early musical direction was shaped by listening to James Brown records and the awe-inspiring work of the great saxophonist, Maceo Parker and Cannonball Adderley. Honoring the flavor of those early recordings, Albright starts the album off with the rousing instrumental track, "Old School Jam," a throwback to the R&B based tunes of the 1970's, with an updated twist. This marriage between the old and new is represented throughout the album, particularly on the aptly titled "Don't Hold Back," which features Albright's skillful playing on the alto saxophone and bass guitar. "Don't Hold Back is an instrumental song which pays tribute to the music of James Brown," explains Albright. "It's my way of paying homage to him".
Known for his unique round sound which is percussive yet soulful, Albright stands in a class all by himself. Groovology was produced by Albright in collaboration with artists from the worlds of R & B, Gospel, and Contemporary jazz, including hit-makers Paul Brown ("I Need You") and Jeff Lorber ("Ain’t No Stoppin"). |
