Following a year when Andy Sheppard toured the States with George Russell, Japan and Europe with Carla Bley, devised his first ever solo concert, delved into drum 'n' bass territory with Claude Deppa, and DJs Rita Ray and Max Reinhardt. He played throughout the UK and into Europe with his own band...he went into the studio to record a new album sponsored by Canary Wharf Arts & Events as part of their millennium programme.
Dancing Man & Woman, his second album for Provocateur Records, features two special guests, the legendary bassist Steve Swallow, and the stunning young tabla player Kuljit Bhamra in addition to the line up seen on his last album - John Parricelli, Steve Lodder, Chris Laurence and Paul Clarvis. The album finds him developing characteristically fresh ideas within territory familiar to Sheppard aficionados - irresistible melody and irresistible grooves inspired by music from India, Latin America and Africa, with solo statements that are muscular and compellingly lyrical in turns.
Features two special guests, the legendary bassist Steve Swallow, and the stunning young tabla player Kuljit Bhamra in addition to the line up seen on his last album. Music commissioned for special Millennium celebrations.
Andy Sheppard
Active Decades: '80s, '90 and '00s Born: Jan 20, 1957 in Warminster, Wilshire, England Genre: Jazz Styles: Post-Bop; Crossover Jazz
One of the more intriguing and versatile British musicians, Andy Sheppard has on occasion made a big impression in the United States. He did not start playing music until he was 19 and planning to go to art college; a listen to John Coltrane's recordings changed the direction of his life. Within three weeks Sheppard was playing in public, but quite a few years of scuffling followed as he learned his craft and developed his own sound. In 1986, Andy Sheppard won a jazz competition and was signed to the Antilles label which served as his breakthrough. Among his activities since then has been work with Gil Evans in France (1987), George Russell, and Carla Bley. Although he has led his own group, Sheppard's highest profile thus far has been his involvement in a trio recording (Songs With Legs) with Carla Bley and Steve Swallow. ---Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
