John Coltrane's impact was profound and wide-ranging, not just on jazz but on all music. Even classical composers like Philip Glass and rock artists like Jerry Garcia, Carlos Santana, and Patti Smith have been influenced by Coltrane, and everyone who plays jazz has been touched by his legacy in some way. These four discs evoke that legacy on an unprecedented scale. Although the heart of this collection comes from the classic sessions Coltrane led for Impulse between 1961 and his death in 1967, it also includes important early recordings he made for the Prestige, Riverside, Blue Note, Columbia, and Atlantic labels, both as the leader of his own groups and as a sideman with Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk -- make this the most comprehensive overview of Coltrane's music ever assembled.
Includes a 60-page booklet with liner notes by Lewis Porter.
Disc 1: Harmonic and Melodic - 73:38 min. Disc 2: Rhythmic 70:23 min. Disc 3: Elvin and Trane 75:45 min. Disc 4: Live 72:50 min. |
