American Dreams, the new recording from Charlie Haden with Michael Brecker. The GRAMMY-winning jazz legends, together with pianist Brad Mehldau, drummer Brian Blade, and a 34-piece orchestra, have created a poignant musical reflection on the ideals and inherent promise of our nation.

"This album wasn't conceived because of the events of September 11th, but to express the way I feel about this country, which is built on the ability to have dreams and create," explains Haden. "This music is dedicated to those who still dream of a society with compassion, deep creative intelligence, and respect for the preciousness of life-for our children and for our future."

Produced by Haden and his wife Ruth Cameron, the CD begins with the lush title track, a composition of Haden's that originated as a folk song. American Dreams also features tunes from several of his fellow jazz compatriots: the Pat Metheny/Lyle Mays collaboration "Travels," Keith Jarrett's "No Lonely Nights" and "Prism," "Ron's Place" by Mehldau and "Bird Food" from Haden's longtime friend and former bandleader, Ornette Coleman.
This set includes two songs by Alan & Marilyn Bergman with Dave Grusin ("It Might Be You" from the film Tootsie and "Love Like Ours"), and the Arnold B. Horwitt/Albert Hague standard "Young and Foolish." Rounding out the collection are "Bittersweet" by Don Sebesky, Haden's own "Nightfall," arranger/conductor Vince Mendoza's "Sotto Voce," and a moving rendition of "America the Beautiful."

Of the latter tune Haden recalls: "I've always wanted to play 'America the Beautiful' and I think that we came up with a way of playing it where you feel what it really stands for." With inspired playing by both Haden and Brecker, this interpretation is certain to become a classic instrumental version of a song that has become even more beloved and meaningful in recent times.
The trio of arrangers used for the project is impressive. GRAMMY Award-winner Alan Broadbent is also a member of the esteemed Quartet West, the acoustic jazz group that Haden formed in 1986. Broadbent lends his expert touch to five of the selections on the CD, including the title track. Jeremy Lubbock, who conducts the pair of Bergman/Grusin tunes and Haden's "Nightfall," has worked with major pop artists like Celine Dion, Michael Jackson, and Rod Stewart. Vince Mendoza, a recent GRAMMY Award winner for his work on Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now, arranged "Travels" and "Sotto Voce."

Throughout a career that now spans more than four decades, Charlie Haden has always fostered the philosophy that music-and the arts in general-should be appreciated without regard to their category or classification. His own musical legacy is an affirmation of that belief, from his early days with the revolutionary Ornette Coleman Quartet, to leading the renowned Liberation Music Orchestra and his own critically acclaimed Quartet West. Haden has consistently refused to limit his talent to any one specific musical genre, as proven by his lengthy history of collaborating with a wide array of artists such as Kenny Barron, Hank Jones, James Cotton, Jim Hall, Lee Konitz, Carlos Paredes, Ginger Baker, Beck, Rickie Lee Jones, and classical composer Gavin Bryars.
