When George Shearing's version of "September in the Rain" became a huge commercial success, it obscured the vitally important techniques that he had brought before the public: his use of distinctive chord voicings in conjunction with guitar and vibraphone; his way of laying back on the beat; and his multi-note phrasing, which bebop players before him had had trouble selling.
Shearing had a knack for delivering the most sophisticated modern jazz in a way that the public gladly accepted. But he also liked to mess with success, introducing the conga in a jazz combo as early as 1952. An astute judge of talent, he gave early exposure to such important musicians as Gary Burton, Cal Tjader, and Toots Thielemans. And as comfortable as he was in the spotlight, he was equally effective as an accompanist for the likes of Nancy Wilson, Billy Eckstine, and Peggy Lee. |
