Jazz
In the early 1970s Donald Byrd teamed up with R&B songwriting & producing team Alphonse and Larry Mizell (Alphonse had been one of his trumpet students) and with Larry's guidance scored a major hit in 1973 with the album Black Byrd. Caricatures was the last album in a string of successful Mizell collaborations with Byrd as well as his last album for Blue Note. Caricatures is the true meeting of funk, soul, and jazz - a sound that is still ever present today. As evidence one only has to look the long list of today's artists who have sampled various Donald Byrd/Mizell Bros. encounters, which includes A Tribe Called Quest, Pete Rock, Tupac, Jazzy Jeff, and countless others. On Caricatures cuts like "Science Funktion" and the title track are funk jams with samples aplenty while tunes like "Dance Band" and "Wild Life" incorporate the grooves of disco era, which had just set itself upon the popular music scene. |
