At Dawn in Rivendell - Selected songs and poems from The Lord of the Rings
Recorded: Nov 2001-Sep 2002
One might be tempted to believe that this release was meant to cash in on the current wave of soundtrack recordings based upon the movies. This would be a false assumption, though, as the Tolkien Ensemble has been around since the mid-'90s, their self-stated purpose to "create a faithful interpretation of the poems included in The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien." The precursors to this venture were An Evening in Rivendell and A Night in Rivendell. This release contains much of the choral and symphonic music that the prior two albums has, but also has the added feature of Christopher Lee (Saruman in the Peter Jackson films) performing spoken word poems on several of the tracks, and even singing one ("Treebeard's Song")! Altogether, quite a jaunty piece of orchestration and well-sung poetic renditions based upon Tolkien's writings. ---Mark Donkers, allmusic |
