The crowned King of the Tenors, Coleman Hawkins, the Best and Only, stood atop all the saxophonists in all the jazz styles for forty years. And yet despite his enormous influence on all players since the Thirties, ne never became attached to any school of jazz. As John Chilton, Hawk's biographer, writes in his liner notes: "[Hawk] remained the cat who walked alone." This collection, with his Forties burning small-group sessions for Keynote and his golden quintet dates of the mid-Fifties, includes various tracks with Roy Eldridge, Tommy Flanagan, Hank Jones, Ben Webster, and Teddy Wilson. |
