Although the Wynton Kelly Trio, the swingingest rhythm section of the Sixties, made a lasting impression as a threesome, they did take on a horn soloist for special engagements. When the Left Bank Jazz Society asked them for an add-on, tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson got his first chance to indulge himself, to play with the rock-solid backing of Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb.
Cobb remembers Kelly fondly in Michael Ullman's liner note-and Ullman feels this CD may be the ultimate showcase for the pianist, who really stretches out. Henderson, for his part, is still surprised at how well he played-he was so in awe of his accompanists. This live gig complements the music available on Four! |
