Although he is not that well-known outside of Florida where is based, Dan McMillion is one of jazz's great high-note trumpeters. Maynard Ferguson is an obvious inspiration, and this CD is dedicated to the late trumpeter. McMillion's spectacular upper-register solos often sound close to Ferguson (his low notes are also quite warm) and his straight-ahead jazz band is just as high-powered as MF's more jazz-oriented groups. Among the key soloists are trombonist Keith Oshiro (who also has a rather impressive range), altoist Tom Dietz, and David Moss on tenor. Every song on this CD has its moments of excitement, even "Danny Boy" and "Hey There." Fans of exciting and swinging big bands will definitely want this release; the title High Octane certainly fits. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
