Starting in 1989, Sinister was a band arising in the middle of the Death-Metal hype. After releasing a demo, which sold about 1500 copies, a promo tape followed. Sending out the promo to various labels resulted in signing up at Nuclear Blast Records, Germany 1991.
Their debut CD 'Cross the Styx' saw the light in early 1992, and sold many copies worldwide. Many live shows all over Europe followed. Touring with bands like Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse and Deicide increased the number of people knowing Sinister.

In the years after that, Sinister succeeded in maintaining their popularity by releasing their second album 'Diabolical Summoning' (1993), 'Hate' (1995) and doing many live shows all over Europe and a very successful 55-show tour through all the USA.
At the end of this period, Death-Metal got less popular, lots of Death-Metal fans switched over to Black-Metal, Gothic and other atmospheric music. Sinister never thought about playing other music than their favourite: Death-Metal. Some years past and the band released their mini-CD 'Bastard Saints' (1996), and played a few live-shows. Several line-up changes followed, and led Sinister to write their most aggressive, brutal and intense album so far: 'Aggressive Measures' (1998).
This time their loyalty to Death-Metal paid off. Death-Metal was back (even though, for Sinister, it had never been gone). The response from fans and critics was good, the band sold lots of albums and played lots of good shows on a short US-tour and at good festivals like Wacken open air, Milwaukee Metalfest and Czech Dynamo. Yet the cooperation between Sinister and the vocalist Eric didn't work out very well, which led to Eric's departure in August 1999. Sinister was searching for a new singer. After some serious tryouts with different singers, Rachel turned out to be the best and the band started to work on their next record 'Creative Killings' (2001) released at Hammerheart Records, September 2001. Shortly after the release, the guitarist Bart decided to quit the band. With a substitute guitarist Sinister continued their promotion of this album with a 3 week European tour with Nile and with shows in Mexico, Colombia, Russia and Belarus.

In 2003 Sinister (disappointed with their cooperation with Hammerheart) signed a new contract with Nuclear Blast Records. What was meant to be a kind of a comeback for the band ended up in their biggest struggle yet. Shortly after their European tour with Cannibal Corpse and the release of the album 'Savage or Grace' (2003), the band split up. The band cancelled all their shows (including Wacken Open Air) and decided that the atmosphere within the band was so dreadful that it would be impossible to go on.
Two years of silence followed before the drummer Aad Kloosterwaard and the bass-player Alex decided to join their forces again. While Aad was tired of his job as a drummer and needed a new challenge, Alex already worked on some new material at home. At first, starting a new band was considered, but within a few weeks the two decided to bring Sinister back to life. They agreed that the line up should be altered in an unorthodox way. Aad was now the new vocalist while Alex switched from bass to guitar. A new drummer was found in Paul Beltman. With this line up a new deal was signed again with Nuclear Blast.

Afterburner saw the light on April 17 2006 and it is considered by the critics and fans to be one of the best albums in their long career. Together with a new bassist Bas van den Bogaard, who joined the band just after the recording of 'Afterburner', the album is massively promoted with live shows in Holland, Belgium, Germany, England, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Russia, Romania, Bulgaria, Serb, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Czech republic and Poland. The band is also working on a tour throughout Mexico in 2007 (February) and a full European tour is scheduled for May/June 2007
