On This Day... At the Vanguard marks Joe Lovano's 22nd release as leader, his 15th for Blue Note and "my third recording as a leader live at the Vanguard, after the double CD with my two quartets [1994's Quartets: Live at the Village Vanguard]."
It is also his first release with his Nonet since his Grammy-winning 52nd Street Themes in 2000. Featuring a talent-packed frontline (tenor saxophonists Lovano, George Garzone, Ralph Lalama; alto saxophonist Steve Slagle; baritone saxophonist Scott Robinson; trumpeter Barry Ries and trombonist Larry Farrell) and rhythm section (pianist John Hicks, bassist Dennis Irwin and drummer Lewis Nash) of which Lovano enthuses: "They're amazing - It's groove city, all the way! The whole thing about swinging, telling stories, and hitting a groove together is what this group is all about." |
