Swedish heavy metal guitar god Yngwie Malmsteen has been the subject of several video releases over the years (such as Rising Force: Live '85, Trial By Fire, The Yngwie Malmsteen Video Collection, etc.), and 2000 saw another title added to the list, the 12-track, 80-minute Live. Recorded in front of a large and receptive audience in May of 1998 in Brazil, Malmsteen (who is joined by singer Mats Leven, bassist Barry Dunaway, keyboardist Mats Olausson, and drummer Jonas Ostman) shreds away throughout, often pulling off the same repetitive, lighting-fast guitar runs over and over again. As many metalheads are by now well aware of, his compositions are often merely an excuse to show off his chops, which is evidenced throughout Live. Included are such standards as "Rising Force," "Trilogy Suite," "Black Star" (which begins with an acoustic guitar interlude), and perhaps his best-known song, the concert closing "I'll See the Light Tonight." Live will often border on Spinal Tap territory for those unimpressed with Malmsteen's shtick, but will be enjoyable for faithful fans.
