Miles Davis

This Columbia JAZZ MOODS compilation is by no means a comprehensive best-of collection (such a thing is impossible to achieve on a single disc). Thankfully, however, this disc is filled with some of the trumpeter's finest recorded moments. Comprised of 10 classic tracks, this album is perfect for those who are interested in Davis, but don't know where to begin (or are daunted by the dozens of albums available). Focusing on Davis's outstanding 1950s and '60s work, this set features timeless renditions of the Gershwin chestnut "Summertime," the mournful "Bye Bye Blackbird," and the appropriately forward-looking "Miles Ahead," plus the brilliantly minimalist "All Blues" and "So What" from one of the most influential jazz albums of all time, KIND OF BLUE.

By no means a greatest hits or career-spanning sampler, this installment of the Jazz Moods: Cool series focuses on sessions during the late '50s and early '60s, a time of great productivity and evolution for Miles Davis. While Davis went through phases of experimentation (one of the few constants in a career filled with innovation, turbulence, and conflict), this is a relatively calm look at the cooler side of Davis' more traditional output, with quite a heavy emphasis on standards that became staples of his live performances during this period. While there is great debate among rabid fans and seasoned scholars as to whether or not this was Davis' most fertile and innovative period, it's inarguable that the performances found here showcase Davis playing with assured confidence and true passion. At an economically reasonable price, this is a nice starting point for people looking to get their feet wet in the ocean of sound that Davis left in his wake.
