This is not the album to experience Mingus the great composer--but for Mingus the bandleader, this is the place. This live album, recorded in 1974, has the Mingus group at the time: George Adams, Dannie Richmond, Don Pullen and Hamiet Bluiett, joined by alumni of past bands: Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Jon Faddis, John Handy, and Charles McPherson, for a rollicking old-fashioned jam session. Mingus picks compositions by one of his biggest influences, Duke Ellington, and everybody (except for Mingus and Richmond) gets to show their stuff and wail. AT CARNEGIE HALL features two long pieces (each about 20 minutes). These consist of the catchy, upbeat themes, then extended solo workouts by all the horn players and Pullen. In feel, this album brings to mind the Norman Granz-produced Jazz At The Philharmonic concerts. McPherson and Faddis represent the mainstream bop tradition; Adams, Bluiett and Pullen push the envelope with their energy-charged "out" solos; and Kirk and Handy claim the middle ground between. A good time was clearly had by all.
Includes original release liner notes by Sy Johnson as well as reissue liner notes by Andrew Homzy. |
