Born in 1949 Richard Christopher Wakeman had a love for music from an early age. At 7 years old he started learning the piano and progressed to pass every piano examination with distinction. The first band he joined as a keyboard player was The Strawbs with whom he released 2 albums before joining Yes. After enjoying gold and platinum success with the band he left to pursue a solo career.
His solo career began by releasing a series of conceptual classical rock albums. In 1973 he composed Journey to the centre of the Earth which was considered a milestone in progressive rock.
From the seventies until today Rick has regularly renewed his membership of Yes with tours and albums whilst continuing his glittering solo career. During the eighties he co-wrote a musical version of George Orwell's 1984 with lyricist Tim Rice. The classic Yes line up reformed in 1998 for a world tour, the subsequent album sold over 2 million copies worldwide.
Rick is still as busy as ever and is a regular after dinner speaker and television personality. In 1999 he released Return to the Centre of the Earth. During breaks in schedule with Yes he continues to release classical and progressive rock albums and tour as a highly accomplished pianist.
