Duke Robillard is not a man of many words. Here is the string virtuoso and singer's brief self-evaluation: 'I'm a musician rooted in the Blues, with similar influences from other styles.?
What an understatement, Robillard can assuredly point to a more than respectable record of achievement in his metier. Still he counts as one of the best white Blues guitarists of the present, his live performances regularly draw huge crowds and his discography contains albums to excite the heartbeat of all lovers of honest, hand-made traditionally rooted American music. Moreover, Robillard's artistic ambition is not limited to his own band. He has also established himself as a sideman and producer.
Duke Robillard decided vehemently for the Blues in 1967, which he then enriched with exciting sonic variations over the course of the next twelve years with his band Roomful Of Blues. But his restless explorer's spirit was finally so strong that in 1979 he left the group and from that point on, in addition to the continued development of his blues style, he ventured various glimpses over the musical fence, venturing into song-oriented rock, rockabilly, country, and jazz. Robillard was of the opinion that all of this belonged to the 'blues-related sound which is ultimately the basis of all American music?.
In 1990 the guitarist allowed himself to be recruited by the legendary Fabulous Thunderbirds. After this interlude (which lasted up to 1992) and the break-up of the Pleasure Kings, Robillard follwed the example of Gary Moore and signed on as a solo artist with Moore's record lable Point Blank, which had established itself under the protective roof of Mother Virgin as a prized address for blues. The result was three strong Robillard albums, Temptation (1984), Duke's Blues and Dangerous Place (1997). The American then recorded two albums for the roots lable Shanachie: Blues For Modern Man (1999) and Explorer (2000). As a sideman, he recently enriched Bob Dylan's 1997 masterpiece Time Out of Mind with magical guitar parts.
And in May of 2000 Duke Robillard was awarded the W.C. Handy Award for Blues Guitarist of the Year.
