New York guitar player John Scofield is always at the forefront of the latest developments in jazz when he isn't way ahead of them, but he has never laost touch with the blues. A favourite of Miles Davis, Scofield teams up with sax player Joe Lovano for an evening of two great musicians, and one fabulous concert.
John Scofield absorbed the influence of guitarists as diverse as Jim Hall and B.B. King to create a unique sound and approach, and Joe Lovano plays tenor sax with swing and intelligence both. When this July 1992 concert was taped the two were reaching new plateaus of mastery and compelling emotional power on their instruments, and they explore a spectrum of moods by way of five Scofield originals. The opening "Meant to Be" has a delicate sense of solicitude. "Grace under Pressure" lends some oomph to the proceedings, followed by the Latin-infelcted "Why Nogales" (feeling like a soft Mexican night), the appropriately frantic "Call 911" and the rhythm-'n'-blues "Chariots". The intricate phrasings of Bill Stewart on his drum kit are as much an attenition-grabber as the headliners, with everyone anchored by the rock-solid bass of Dennis Irwin.
